Every week upto 20 musicians meet up in iconic pubs to take part in Folk Music and Song Sessions, where they gather round the tables taking turns to start a song or tune, the others, plus locals and visitors join in as they are willing and able.

The only money that changes hands is for beer at the bar, the group has no formal structure, no constitution, no bank account and no committee.

On the First Tuesday of each month they meet at the White Swan in Bradford Street. This pub has recently been bought back from a derelict state to its former street corner glory.

On the Second Tuesday they meet at a very different pub, the Craft Inn on Stratford Road in Shirley. This micro pub is s specialist in craft ales from around the world and from local breweries.

On the Third Tuesday of the month The Wellington in Bennett’s Hill, Birmingham City Centre, hosts the group in its upstairs front room and has done so for nearly eight years. This city centre pub is a Mecca for real ale drinkers with 14 hand pulled beers on tap.

Fouth Tuesdays see many of the same group joined by others from Warwickshire and Worcestershire at The Blue Bell Cider House in Warings Green Road, Earlswood.

So what of the music? Basically if folk in the session are playing it in the pub it must be folk. From 16th century tunes through Woody Guthery, Donovan, Irish Songs and traditional tunes to the Beatles and even folk renditions of Steps!

All sessions start at around 7.30pm.

The nearest we have to structure and organisation is the Facebook page where I keep people updated with what’s going on.

If we are lucky enough to get fice Tuesdays in a month we would like to do something a little different. So if you have ideas or access to a quirky venue (coal mine, church tower, band stand) drop me a line.
