Henry Hammond was a classics teacher at the Edinburgh Academy, where he met George Gardiner. He first went collecting with Gardiner in 1904. From 1905 to 1907 he worked with his brother Robert, who took down the words while Henry noted the tunes, and together they gathered more than 900 songs from 193 singers, most of them in Dorset. Sixteen of his Dorset songs appeared in Folk Songs of England.
