George Townshend was born at Wootten Farm near Lewes, where his father was bailiff. He sang at the crowded Saturday night sing songs in his local pub. He was a confident performer who liked to talk about each song before singing it. Ken Stubbs and Brian Matthews recorded him in the early 1960s, and Musical Traditions later issued those recordings as Come, Hand to Me the Glass.
