Danny Brazil was born in Ireland while his Romany family were travelling there, though he always insisted he was English. He drove ambulances throughout the Second World War, played the mouthorgan and was a celebrated step dancer. A fight left him with a harsh voice. Even so, Peter Shepheard and Gwilym Davies recorded a remarkable number of complete ballads from him.
