A singer from the Gaeltacht of An Rinn in County Waterford, Tóibín inherited the Déise song tradition from his parents, both well known singers. He won the main singing prize at the Oireachtas three years running from 1961 to 1963, then the leading award for traditional singing in Ireland. Songs such as Na Connerys and Róisín Dubh were among his best known.
