Jim Reid was born and raised in Stobswell, Dundee. He heard Seamus Ennis on the radio during national service and was drawn to folk song for good. He sang with The Taysiders and the Foundry Bar Band before his 1984 solo album I Saw the Wild Geese Flee, whose title song, his setting of a Violet Jacob poem, is now sung far and wide. At seventy one he was named Scots Singer of the Year.
