Eric Bogle grew up in Peebles. He wrote songs and poems from the age of eight and played rock and roll in the Borders as a teenager. He emigrated to Australia in his twenties, where he wrote And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda and No Man’s Land, also known as The Green Fields of France. His songs have been taken up by Joan Baez, the Pogues and Mary Black.
