Rory MacDonald was born in Dornoch and grew up in Lochmaddy on North Uist and then in Portree on Skye. In 1973 he and his younger brother Calum founded Runrig with Blair Douglas, at first as a dance band. He played bass and wrote most of the melodies to Calum’s words. After Donnie Munro left in 1997 he sang the band’s Gaelic songs.
