Hundreds of Up’ards and Down’ards, traditionally born north or south of the River Henmore, struggle for a hand-painted ball through the town, fields and river on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. A goal is scored by tapping the ball three times on the goal stone at one of two old mill sites about three miles apart. Play ends at 22:00.
