Alnwick has played Shrovetide football since at least the 18th century, between the parishes of St Michael and St Paul. The game moved off the streets to the Pastures, a field given by the Duke of Northumberland, and the first side to score two hales, goals dressed in greenery, wins.

Alnwick Castle barbican
The ball is thrown down from the castle barbican at about 14:00, then the Duke's piper leads the players down to the Pastures below the castle, beside the River Aln, where the game is played. Watch from the edge of the field.
