May Day was already an established custom at Ickwell by 1563, and a permanent maypole has stood on the green since 1872. A procession of dancers carrying garlanded hoops escorts the May Queen to her crowning, and dancers plait the ribbons round the maypole.

Morris men dance at Northill from 11:30, and the procession leaves the Crown car park in Northill at 13:30 for Ickwell Green, where the May Queen is crowned at 14:00 and the maypole is danced. Watching from outside the arena is free.
