The 17th century historian Geoffrey Keating wrote that a great fire was lit on Tlachtga, the Hill of Ward, on the eve of Samhain, and that the fires of Ireland were relit from it. Athboy marks the tradition by lighting a Samhain fire each Hallowe’en, now as part of the Púca Festival, with free music.
