St Andrew has been the patron saint of Scotland from time out of mind, after the legend that St Rule brought his relics to the coast of Fife, where the city of St Andrews grew up. His day, 30 November, was the great occasion for Scots living in England and abroad to meet and dine together. The nearest Sunday fixes the first Sunday in Advent, so his feast either opens or closes the church year. It is now kept as Scotland’s national day.
