Hone recorded two customs of the bells at Hatherleigh in Devon. Every morning and evening, soon after the clock struck five and nine, a bell tolled out the day of the month, perhaps for villagers who could not read a calendar. And after a funeral the bells rang a lively peal, as they did elsewhere after a wedding, the parishioners being content that the dead had gone from trouble to rest.
