On the way to Nannau, Hone’s account of the country below Cadair Idris passes a small lake called Llyn y Tri Graienyn, the lake of the three grains. Three huge rocks lie there, tumbled from the mountain, and the country people said they were three grains of grit that had got into the shoe of the giant Idris, which he shook out at that spot as soon as he felt them hurting his foot. Nearby a precipice called the Thieves’ Leap took its name from a tradition that thieves were brought there and thrown down.
