It was said in Suffolk that mushrooms will not grow any more once they have been seen. Chambers’s correspondent offered the plain explanation that whoever first sees them picks them. It was one of a string of Suffolk sayings sent to Chambers in 1862, along with the belief that the price of corn rose and fell with Barton Mere.
