We fasted in the light

In Dorset during the eighteenth century boys went in procession on Easter Eve carrying rough torches and a small black flag. As they walked they chanted a two-line rhyme about the fast now being over. Brand’s editor took the torches and the rhyme for a survival of the old church ceremonies of the eve, when the lights were put out and new fire was struck.
