Every year on St Barnabas’s Day the court for the whole Forest of Englewood was held at Hesket in Cumberland, by the side of the highway under a thorn tree. Nicolson and Burn, the historians of Westmorland and Cumberland, saw in it the very ancient manner of holding assemblies in the open air. Brand quotes them in writing of the old open-air meetings of May.
