Paddington gave out bread, cheese and beer to its parishioners on the Sunday before Christmas, from land said to have been left by two maiden gentlewomen. The bread was once thrown from the church steeple to be scrambled for, and in Lysons’s day part of it still was. Brand quotes Lysons’s Environs of London.
