An Australian pianist and composer, he was drawn to English folk song by a lecture from Lucy Broadwood and went on to collect more than three hundred songs. From 1906 he was one of the first collectors to use a phonograph, recording singers in Lincolnshire and elsewhere on more than two hundred cylinders. Those songs later shaped his wind band suite Lincolnshire Posy.
