Estyn Evans grew up on the Welsh border and joined Queen’s University Belfast in 1928, later becoming Ireland’s first professor of geography. He studied how people had shaped the Irish landscape over the centuries, and his books Irish Heritage and Irish Folk Ways were pioneering studies of rural life, tools and custom.
