Vin Garbutt came from South Bank on Teesside and played in a pop group before he found folk music in the 1960s. His first album, The Valley of Tees, came out in 1972, and for decades he toured the world with songs of sharp social comment, nimble whistle playing and very funny stage patter. In 2001 he was named Best Live Act at the BBC folk awards.
