Joseph Taylor was a carpenter and farm bailiff in north Lincolnshire who sang for pleasure and in competitions. Percy Grainger heard him at Brigg in 1905 and recorded him on wax cylinder. In 1908 he became the first English traditional singer issued on a commercial record. His Brigg Fair inspired Delius, and revival singers such as Martin Carthy later took up his songs.
