Michael Coleman

Fiddler; Sligo style

Born
31 January 1891, Killavil, County Sligo
Died
4 January 1945, Manhattan, New York, USA

Michael Coleman was the most celebrated Irish fiddler of the 78 rpm era. He grew up in a musical farming family in south Sligo, where his father played the flute. He emigrated to New York in 1914 and recorded a great deal there through the 1920s and 1930s. Those fast, richly ornamented records carried the Sligo style back across the Atlantic and shaped fiddling all over Ireland.
