Willie Clancy grew up in a west Clare family where both parents sang and played the concertina. He started on whistle and flute before the uilleann pipes became his instrument, and he won at the Oireachtas in 1947. After years working as a carpenter in London he came home to Miltown Malbay. The summer school founded there in his name after his death is now one of the great gatherings of traditional music.
