Calum Maclean, brother of the poet Sorley MacLean, collected folklore in Connemara for the Irish Folklore Commission before it sent him home to the Highlands in 1946. From 1951 he worked for the new School of Scottish Studies in Edinburgh. There he made hundreds of recordings and filled thousands of pages with Gaelic tales, songs and traditions.
