Joe Holmes came from near Ballymoney in County Antrim, where he worked in flax scutching and later tended the bowling club greens. From the 1960s he travelled to sessions around Ireland with the singer Len Graham, and their album Chaste Muses, Bards and Sages became a favourite. He died a fortnight after finishing their second record, After Dawning.
