The American folklorist spent much of the 1950s in London, where he worked with the BBC, Peter Kennedy, Hamish Henderson and Séamus Ennis to record singers such as Harry Cox, Margaret Barry and Elizabeth Cronin. He led the Ramblers with Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger and Shirley Collins, and his first Scottish visit is credited with spurring the School of Scottish Studies.
