Alasdair Fraser, twice winner of the Scottish National Fiddle Championship, worked as a petrophysicist before music won out after his move to California. He founded the Valley of the Moon fiddle school and a long running course on Skye. With the cellist Natalie Haas he revived the old Scottish pairing of fiddle and cello for dance music.
