Billy Pigg was born at Dilston Park near Corbridge and learned the Northumbrian smallpipes by ear from local players. After winning a learners’ competition in 1923 he became one of the most influential pipers of his day, and he was a vice president of the Northumbrian Pipers Society from 1930 until his death.
