He travelled Ireland recording traditional musicians and brought them to radio listeners, first through Ceolta Tíre and A Job of Journeywork in the 1950s. From 1970 his Sunday morning programme Mo Cheol Thú ran for 35 years, known for his quiet, unhurried voice. He had a leading part in the revival of Irish traditional music.
