Davie Stewart came from a long line of Scots hawkers and tinsmiths, and was busking and learning songs on the road while still a boy. He served and was wounded in the First World War, then returned to a travelling life of bothy work, singing and accordion playing, often alongside his friend Jimmy MacBeath. Alan Lomax recorded him, and The Dowie Dens o Yarrow became one of his signature songs.
