Dónal Lunny helped found Planxty, the Bothy Band and Moving Hearts, three of the bands that changed how Irish traditional music was played. His bouzouki and bodhrán playing and his skill as a producer shaped records for Mary Black, Kate Bush and many others. In 2025 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards.
