Duncan Williamson was one of sixteen children of a Traveller family, born in a tent on the shore of Loch Fyne. He worked as a dyker, farm labourer and horse dealer. His store of stories, songs and ballads was immense, and Hamish Henderson counted him among the most remarkable tradition bearers of all. In later life he told his tales in schools and at festivals far beyond Scotland.
