Frances Tolmie spent many years gathering the traditional Gaelic songs of Skye and the Western Isles. In 1911 the Folk Song Society published more than a hundred of them in its Journal, the first collection of songs not in English that it had printed. Ralph Vaughan Williams praised how well her transcriptions kept the distinctive rhythms of Gaelic singing.
