George Ewart Evans grew up in a Welsh mining community and wrote poetry and stories before he turned to oral history. In East Anglia he recorded the memories of farm workers whose way of life was fading, in books such as Ask the Fellows Who Cut the Hay, The Horse in the Furrow and The Pattern Under the Plough.
