George Gardiner was a Scottish classics master at the Edinburgh Academy who took up English folk song after joining the Folk-Song Society. On Lucy Broadwood’s advice he worked mainly in Hampshire from 1905. He would visit singers himself and later send musician colleagues to note their tunes. He gathered about 1,400 songs, and in 1909 an issue of the Society’s journal was given over to his finds.
