A painter and antiquary who helped build the collections of the Royal Irish Academy, he also gathered Irish airs throughout his life. The Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland appeared in 1855, and by his death he held more than two thousand melodies. Many were later published by Charles Villiers Stanford in the Complete Collection of Irish Music.
