A poet, songwriter and folklorist, he was a driving force of the Scottish folk revival and worked at Edinburgh’s School of Scottish Studies from 1955 to 1987. He brought singers such as Jeannie Robertson and Flora MacNeil to wider notice and helped Alan Lomax record in Scotland.
