Hamish Moore was born in Trinidad to a piping father. He trained as a vet in Edinburgh before leaving his job in 1986 to play and make pipes. His 1985 album Cauld Wind Pipes was the first complete modern recording of Lowland and smallpipes, and his workshop, later shared with his son Fin, helped make bellows pipes common again. He founded the Ceolas summer school in South Uist.
