Hector MacAndrew was born on the Fyvie Castle estate, where his father was head gardener and piper. He combined classical training in Edinburgh with the older fiddle tradition of the Gows, and after the Second World War he devoted himself to keeping Scottish fiddling alive, recording for Parlophone, the BBC and the School of Scottish Studies.
