Ishbel MacAskill grew up in Broker on Lewis and then in Stornoway, and she did not sing in public until a fringe event at the 1979 National Mòd, when she was in her late thirties. Known as the Gaelic diva, she took unaccompanied Gaelic song to festivals across Europe and North America and to Cape Breton’s Celtic Colours. She died after a fall at her home in Inverness.
