James Madison Carpenter was an American scholar who made a major collection of songs, ballads and folk drama across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. He recorded singers on Dictaphone cylinders and typed their words as they dictated. His collection is held at the Library of Congress and has been digitised with the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.
