John Lorne Campbell was one of the foremost Gaelic scholars of his century and an early user of sound recording in the field. With his wife, Margaret Fay Shaw, he settled on Canna in 1938, and in 1981 he gave the island, his library and his sound archive to the National Trust for Scotland.
