William ‘Jumbo’ Brightwell got his nickname from an old sailor, Jumbo Poacher, whom he met as a boy. He started work scaring birds and later spent twenty years as a shunter at Garrett’s engineering works in Leiston. He was one of the Brightwell family of singers at the Eel’s Foot in Eastbridge, and was still singing when Keith Summers found him in the 1970s.
