A great granddaughter of the piano maker John Broadwood, she was a founding member of the Folk-Song Society in 1898, later its honorary secretary and editor of its journal. With J. A. Fuller Maitland she compiled English County Songs, which Vaughan Williams called the starting point of the modern folk song movement. She collected in Surrey, Sussex and well beyond, and helped run the Leith Hill Music Festival.
