Raised in Kells, County Meath, and steeped in the Donegal songs of his aunt Neilí, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill formed Skara Brae with his sisters in the early 1970s. He was a founder of the Bothy Band, whose guitar and vocal harmonies helped reshape Irish traditional music. Later, in Oregon, he took that sound in new directions with Nightnoise.
