Paddy Moloney grew up in north Dublin and played the tin whistle and uilleann pipes by ear. In 1962 he founded The Chieftains. He led the group on every one of its albums and took Irish traditional music to stages around the world. He also helped found Claddagh Records and wrote music for films including Barry Lyndon.
