Born into a family of pipers, Touhey was taken to Boston as a small child and became the most celebrated Irish piper in America. He made his living on the vaudeville stage and was among the first traditional musicians to sell recordings, cutting wax cylinders at home and posting them to buyers. Francis O’Neill called him the genial wizard of the Irish pipers.
