Rachel Unthank grew up in Ryton on Tyneside in a family steeped in folk song, and learned to sing and clog dance at clubs and festivals as a child. She founded Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, later The Unthanks, whose album The Bairns was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2008. She also plays cello.
